Free blog hosting: what Cloudflare Pages actually gives you

A practical look at Cloudflare Pages for a static blog: speed, limits, images, CMS options, domains and the important trade-offs.

IN THIS STORY
  • free blog hosting
  • Cloudflare Pages
  • Astro
Global edge network, data centre and a lightweight website

The concrete detail comes first, the conclusion second. Below we show the reasoning, its limits and what this story can genuinely add to your own work.

“Free hosting” usually comes with very small print. Instead of comparing promises, we deployed this blog to Cloudflare Pages and recorded what actually works.

The short answer

Cloudflare Pages is a strong fit for a lightweight blog, portfolio or static magazine. It is not free WordPress hosting: it does not run the PHP and MySQL stack required by themes such as JNews.

Tech2u uses Astro. Articles are Markdown files transformed into ready-to-serve HTML during deployment. Readers receive a fast page without a database query on every visit.

What you still have to build

Hosting does not provide an editorial workflow by itself. Drafts, image management, previews, backups and permissions require either a lightweight CMS or a carefully designed file-based process.

Our conclusion is simple: the free plan removes infrastructure cost, but not editorial responsibility. For a small publication that values speed and control, that is a very fair trade.

REVIEW / 0—10

Tech2u verdict

A strong foundation for a lightweight static publication: fast and inexpensive to run, provided the editorial workflow is designed deliberately.

8.7/ 10

Tech2u opinion for an Astro-based static blog; this is not a universal score for every hosting use case.

+ Pros

  • Automatic HTTPS, CDN delivery and fast static pages
  • Deployment previews and straightforward rollback
  • A generous free starting point for blogs, portfolios and magazines

− Cons

  • It does not run classic WordPress, PHP or MySQL
  • CMS access and the editorial workflow require separate setup
  • Server-side functions have limits separate from static assets
Best forCreators and small editorial teams that want a fast publication and can work with a static generator or lightweight CMS.
