Local AI or cloud AI? The decision starts with data, not benchmarks

A practical comparison of local models and cloud services through privacy, cost, convenience, quality and offline work.

The concrete detail comes first, the conclusion second. Below we show the reasoning, its limits and what this story can genuinely add to your own work.

“Which model is best?” is often the wrong first question. Start with where the data may go, how long it must remain available and what happens when the connection or service limit disappears.

Local means control — and maintenance

A model running on your computer can keep files close and work offline. That does not automatically make the whole application private: updates, telemetry and integrations still matter. Hardware, energy and maintenance also have a cost.

Cloud means convenience — and dependency

Cloud services usually provide stronger models, a faster start and effortless updates. In return, you accept limits, subscriptions and the need to understand retention policies.

Tech2u uses a hybrid rule: sensitive or lightweight work stays local; tasks requiring the strongest model go to an approved cloud service. A benchmark becomes useful only after the data boundary is clear.

A rule before running the task

We classify the material first: public, internal, confidential or containing third-party data. Only then do we select a model. This does not guarantee security, but it makes the risk visible and testable instead of leaving the decision to fashion or a single benchmark.
