Backups in the age of AI: generating again is not recovery
Why prompts cannot replace source files, model versions, licences and a tested project recovery process.
- backup
- AI
- source files

The concrete detail comes first, the conclusion second. Below we show the reasoning, its limits and what this story can genuinely add to your own work.
“We can generate it again” sounds like a backup plan until the model changes. The same prompt may produce different images, voices or code one month later. A service may also disappear or change its terms.
We preserve the final export, source files, assets, tool version, important settings and licence information. The prompt belongs in the manifest, but it does not replace the result.
A backup exists only when it can be restored in a new directory without relying on the author’s memory. We periodically open projects, decode media and identify missing dependencies.
AI accelerates creation. That makes calm, boring storage discipline even more important.
